How to Create a Windows Password Recovery Bootdisk (USB/CD) Forgetting your Windows password can be a stressful experience, locking you out of your important files and applications. Fortunately, you can create a password recovery bootdisk (using a USB drive or CD) to reset your password and regain access.

This guide covers both the official Windows method for local accounts and third-party tools for more complex situations.

Method 1: The Official Windows Password Reset Disk (Best for Local Accounts)

If you are still signed in or can create this disk on another computer, this is the safest method. Note: This does not work for Microsoft Accounts (email login). Prepare: Plug a USB flash drive into your computer 0.5.1.

Open Tool: In the taskbar search box, type “create password reset” and select the result 0.5.1.

Run Wizard: The “Forgotten Password Wizard” will open. Click Next 0.5.5.

Select Drive: Choose your USB flash drive and click Next 0.5.5.

Enter Password: Type your current local account password and click Next 0.5.2.

Finish: Once completed, click Next and Finish. Remove the USB and store it safely 0.5.1.

Method 2: Creating a Bootable Recovery USB/CD (For Locked Users)

If you are already locked out, you need a different approach. You will need to use a working computer to create this tool. Using Hiren’s BootCD (Popular Option)

Hiren’s BootCD PE is a popular, free bootable tool that can reset passwords 0.5.4.

Download: Download the ISO file from the official Hiren’s BootCD site on a working computer.

Burn/Flash: Use a tool like Rufus to burn the ISO file onto a USB drive (at least 4GB recommended).

Boot: Insert the USB into the locked computer, restart, and enter the BIOS/Boot Menu (usually F2, F12, Del, or Esc) to boot from the USB 0.5.3.

Reset: Once Hiren’s boots, use the built-in password reset tools (such as NT Password Edit) to clear the password for your user account 0.5.4. How to Use Your New Recovery Disk Insert the USB/CD into the locked Windows computer. Restart the computer.

When the login screen appears, click Reset password (if using Method 1) or follow the on-screen prompt if you used a tool like Hiren’s 0.5.5. Create a new password and log in. Important Tips

Keep it Safe: A password reset disk can be used by anyone to gain access to your computer.

Microsoft Accounts: If you use a Microsoft Account, simply use the “Forgot Password” link on Microsoft’s website on another device. Backup: Always keep backups of your data.
